About the Conference

Gathering great names of the Propolis Research to promote a sustainable future for Propolis

The scientific program of the 4th International Propolis Conference : Propolis : Immunity – Community – Sustainability , which will be held in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo State, Brazil between 13-15th February 2025, will bring together researchers working in the isolation and identification of new compounds of propolis, development and quality control, authenticity, residues and contaminants methods, pharmacology, toxicology, development of new process, products and technologies as well as its therapeutic applications including safety and efficacy, in several models and clinical trials.  It will enable scientists to exchange information and discuss strategies to improve the use of propolis as a sustainable tool for immunity and health promotion. The conference will include oral and poster presentations, and cover all the principal issues related to propolis studies and will be discussed  by national and international scientists, decision makers and consumer organizations.

Brazil’s Leading Role in Green Propolis Research

Brazil is at the forefront of global research on propolis and propolis extracts. The country’s scientific investigations span a broad range of studies, from chemical and physico-chemical analyses to clinical research, exploring the safety and efficacy of propolis through both in vitro and in vivo models.

Brazil’s rich biodiversity offers unique varieties of propolis, including green propolis from Baccharis dracunculifolia, red propolis from Dalbergia ecastophylum and Symphonia globulifera, and various types of brown propolis from diverse botanical sources, distinct from those found in Europe and Asia.

In 2020, amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic, Brazil presented a very interesting review about the possible use of propolis extract in the covid-19 patients (Berretta et al. 2020) being the top 1 of the year in its Journal, besides the conduction of the first randomized, controlled, and placebo-controlled clinical trial using propolis extract on hospitalized COVID-19 patients. This groundbreaking study was led by Dr. Marcelo Silveira, Dra. Andresa A. Berretta and Dr. David De Jong (Silveira et al. 2021). The trial demonstrated that green propolis EPP-AF extract supplementation could significantly reduce hospitalization times, marking a significant milestone in the therapeutic application of bee products and underscoring the potential of propolis in apitherapy.
